Relieve Denture Pain And Discomfort: Identifying Causes & Solutions

Relieve Denture Pain And Discomfort

Do you feel denture pain or discomfort, with your current pair of dentures? Full or partial dentures are treatments that don’t tend to cause pain to most patients. In fact, they can greatly improve dental function.

However, some comfort issues can arise with temporary dentures, when your gums shrink, this can lead to pain and they may need to be relined or replaced. From an ill-fitting denture to bacteria build-up, we’ll evaluate the most common problems related to these treatments and how you can start relieving some of the pain and discomfort you may be experiencing.

Our experts at Shreve Denture Clinic know how to address all of these problems quickly. If you’re looking for an effective and long-lasting solution for your pain and discomfort, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation today.

What Can Cause Discomfort or Pain to Your Dentures?

Dental pain or discomfort may come from several reasons. While pain may be noticeable right away, only a professional can identify the underlying issue. Over-the-counter pain medications may not often be enough to address sore spots in your mouth, so it’s always better that you check with an expert.

Here’s a list of all the factors that can lead to pain and discomfort with your partial or full dentures:

Bad Fit or Misalignments

A common reason why your dentures may hurt is an improper fit. When an implant doesn’t fit well, it may slip and move. If this goes on for a while, it may cause gum abrasion, leading to sores in your mouth.

On top of that, a denture with an improper fit may trap food particles between the material and the gums, leading to irritation whenever you’re speaking or eating.

Misalignments, on the other hand, can exert a lot of pressure on jaw nerves, causing pain. In other scenarios, this problem can alter your jaw’s alignment, which could cause discomfort whenever you chew or talk.

In any case, you must visit your dentist as soon as you become uncomfortable. Waiting to see if the problem goes away will only make it worse.

Adjustment Phase

Many people go through a rough adjustment phase when they wear dentures. Usually, this is because there’s extra pressure on the gums.

Some bodies take time to adjust to dentures, so they may lead to mild discomfort. The best way to ensure there are no underlying issues is to check with a professional.

Bacteria/Poor Cleaning

Poor hygiene will cause bacteria build-up on the dentures. Not only will this lead to discomfort, but it can also cause sores.

The more bacteria there are, the higher the possibility of yeast forming under the denture, leading to even more discomfort. You must clean your dentures frequently and maintain proper oral hygiene to ensure you’re not at risk of developing these problems.

Is It Possible to Relieve Your Pain and Discomfort?

Absolutely! Experiencing pain doesn’t mean that you have to deal with it forever. Of course, the solutions available may vary depending on the severity of the issue and the patient.

You can schedule a consultation with our team to explore the potential reasons for your discomfort/pain. Once we have a better idea of what’s happening, we can recommend effective treatment options that will get rid of the problem as soon as possible.

Never try getting rid of your pain without consulting with a professional first. Making the wrong move will likely lead to even more discomfort in the future.

Options You May Consider for Denture Care

There are a few things you could do to promote better health. If there aren’t any underlying issues with your teeth, some of these solutions may ease your pain and discomfort.

Let’s cover the most effective solutions:

Proper Hygiene

You must keep your mouth clean if you want to avoid pain as much as possible. When your mouth is free of bacteria, you’ll have a higher chance of preventing bad sores.

Maintenance

It’s not just about wearing your dentures. Most of the time, you’ll get maintenance recommendations from your doctor, including frequent washing. Following these instructions will ensure that your dentures are always in great shape for you to wear.

Re-lining/Re-fitting

Your mouth may go through some changes over time, which may lead to discomfort with your dentures. In these cases, you may have to go to your doctor to get a re-lining or re-fitting procedure. This makes sure that your dentures remain the perfect fit for your mouth.

Pain Relief Medication

Pain relief medication may help you when discomfort is too severe. However, keep in mind that this solution is only temporary. If you don’t address the underlying issue in time, the pain will come back eventually.

Always consult with a doctor before taking any medication, and make sure you don’t ignore the problem for too long.

Should You Get a Denture Adhesive?

While some people may recommend adhesives to keep dentures in place, they shouldn’t be necessary if you have the right fit. By getting help from dental professionals, you will ensure that you don’t need to take any extra steps to ensure your dentures don’t move around all the time.

How Important Is Your Diet While Dealing with Denture Pain and Discomfort?

It may not seem like it, but monitoring your diet can help you avoid pain and discomfort with your dentures. Certain foods can lead to discomfort while wearing dentures, including chewy, crunchy, hard, or sticky meals.

In some cases, you may want to stick to softer foods to reduce pressure on your gums. Some great options include yogurt and mashed potatoes.

Another important factor to consider is hydration. Having a dry mouth can also lead to discomfort while wearing dentures, so make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Can You Wear Dentures All Day?

Wearing dentures 24/7 isn’t usually recommended. They’re meant to be removable prosthetics.

While you can technically wear your dentures all day and night, you should remove them from time to time. This will give your gums time to rest and recover.

On the other hand, not removing your dentures may lead to gum inflammation and even accelerated bone loss.

A professional can give you a list of suggestions after getting your dentures, including when you should remove them.
